After bringing life to 8 gorgeous princesses (there’re white, Asian, native American, and even an Egyptian  princess), Disney’s first African-American princess, Tiana, is coming soon in its latest animation : The Princess and The Frog – inspired by Grimm’s brothers story.

This is the first 2D classic, hand-drawn animation by Disney since 2004. I love hand-drawn cartoons as they bring much of  the nostalgic childhood feeling . Disney’s work is usually accompanied by heartwarming musical…can’t wait to see this latest installment!

A recent NY Times article, shows the conflict that exists in the NYC public school system between what a good education should be and the desire to raise graduation rates. The unfortunate consequence is that although many students are receiving diplomas, they are not prepared for college or any world outside of high school. What was, perhaps, designed to be a benefit to students is actually a great disservice. Today’s post looks at some of the effects of such policies and makes some recommendations about what should be done in the future.High school graduation rates around the country have been disappointing and hovering around 60%. In New York City, however, rates have been rising rapidly. Unfortunately, what seems to be happening is not that schools are doing a better job of educating students to meet those standards, but that schools are merely lowering their standards, or giving diplomas to students based on judgment calls. This is sending a message that students do not need to learn, to study, or in some cases, even go to class. On top of that, it does not prepare them for a life after high school – whether the student’s plans were for college or entering the workforce. In addition to lacking the knowledge that would have been gained in high school, students will also lack the discipline necessary to hold on a job.

In related news, the City University of New York (CUNY), is raising its admissions standards. Many within the university feel that students are unprepared for college and lack basic skills and that raising standards will raise the calibre of students in the classroom. However, critics of the plan feel that it will keep many low-income and minority students out of the institution. Either way, the debate calls into question what a role a public university should play in educating students and its relationship to the K-12 system.

TeacherJay is an employee of one of the Senior Colleges within CUNY and sees that some students are certainly unprepared for college-level work. However, CUNY, a state-funded institution receives most of its student body directly from the New York City public school system, also state-funded. Shouldn’t New York State become more involved in the process and be there to help students? It seems that the schools are not preparing “college-bound” students to survive within the public university system. While the high schools are able to improve their appearance they are merely passing on the problem to other institutions. In the long run, students are still the ones missing out.

Courtney Love used to be fat.

And to be honest, she looked great in my opinion. I mean, she didn’t always wear the most body-appropriate clothing when she was heavy, but she still looked much healthier than she did before. She’s a very beautiful woman (I don’t care what people have to say about her antics, beauty is beauty) and the extra weight on her figure added to her good looks. Before she put on the weight, she was heavily into drugs, making her look emaciated and strung-out.

She looked full and curvaceous and lively. She looked healthy, she looked ripe. But there was no mistaking it – she was fat.

(No one wants a bone but a dog, right?)

Even when she put on the weight about two or so years ago and people mocked her for it, she fought back against the criticism:

Reformed rocker Courtney Love has lashed out at critics of her recent weight gain, insisting her drug addiction was the reason behind her previously skinny frame.

The former HOLE frontwoman is finally sober after years of drug problems and is happy with her fuller figure, because it means she is now healthy, reports the New York Daily News.

Love says, “I was really, really thin because of what I was doing.”

Love alluded to teen Hollywood stars who are currently under scrutiny by the media over their increasingly gaunt appearance.

She explains, “When all these little teenyboppers finally go into rehab, they’re going to get fat, too.”

But now she’s back to where she started – thin. And not just thin (because there’s certainly nothing wrong with being thin), but skeletally, unhealthily thin. This time, without the drugs as far as we know.

Honestly, should a 42 year-old woman look so emaciated? I mean, the gossip blogs are all up in arms about her “rockin’ body”, but I actually find such a dramatic weight-loss disturbing. I think she looked healthier (and much more attractive) before! Then again, maybe I’m bias to a more full-figured look….

There’s nothing wrong with being skinny and trying to be healthy. But since her recent weight-loss, she looks bony and not at all in the best of health.

Says Courtney about her recent transformation:

I’m not going to call Courtney a hypocrite, because she’s not. She never really loved her fuller figure, she only liked the fact that it meant she was off of drugs. I believe her when she’s worked hard to lose the weight, but I still can’t help feeling disappointed that we lost another plump media figure to weight-loss. I mean, Courtney’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this topic. America Ferrera, Sarah Rue, Ricki Lake are all melting away as we speak and it makes me feel betrayed, as Big Fat Deal puts it.

Domino’s revamped its online presence last month as part of its “You Got 30 Minutes” brand re-launch campaign, including adding the new BFD Builder for custom online orders. Short for Big Fantastic Deal, the BFD Builder lets consumers create the pizza of their dreams—specifying the type of crust, the amount of sauce and cheese, and unlimited toppings—for a flat rate of USD 10.99.

What’s really interesting, though, is that consumers can name and register the pizzas they design in Domino’s BFD database, where they can be viewed and ordered by other consumers. Nearly 12,000 pizzas have been registered so far, including the “Happy Birthday Aaron” and “Rhonda Half Doug Half,” for example. The site even tracks how many people have ordered each registered pizza so far, and consumers can view the database with the most popular pizzas first, as well as by newest, oldest or alphabetically. Top of the “most popular” list, incidentally, is the “Ciao Bella!” which has been ordered over 83,000 times.
